I sat down with my homie Iamsu and discussed my career! Watch part two below.

It’s 12:54am on a Wednesday, and I’m sitting down with IAMSU and his cameraman in the front room of their hotel suite. Su was in town for a headlining show in Santa Ana, followed by another one the next night in Los Angeles. I had planned to interview the Bay Area rapper at the LA show, but while I was out and about that evening, I’d received a FaceTime call from him, telling me to come and hang. He was an hour out from my house in the Valley, but I still made the trek. We smoked, we hung out with his mom, walked down a highway to get some gas station snacks and then eventually decided, “What better time than now to do an interview?”
I first met IAMSU in 2014, while he was promoting his first studio album, Sincerely Yours. That year, he’d go on a national tour with Wiz Khalifa, following up three insane years that included back to back to back smash singles: a feature on LoveRance’s “Up” in 2011, a feature on E-40’s “Function” in 2012, and a feature on Sage The Gemini’s “Gas Pedal” in 2013. He’s continued to grow his profile in music every year since, while remaining so independent, that I still get a text and an email directly from him for every new song, video or even a vlog.

I had to play the homie IAMSU’s record “By My Side” on Hot 97. One of my faves right now!

Our podcast had a live show at SXSW this year, so I went down a few days early to catch some shows and have some fun! I had the pleasure of seeing Atlantic artist PJ perform a few times as well as NEF The Pharaoh, Tdot iLLdude, Mike Zombie and Chill Moody.
Thank you to Annie at Mass Appeal for taking care of me at the Mass Appeal BBQ (featuring Nas, Dave East, Mannie Fresh, Cipha Sounds, Yo Gotti and many more) and the Mass Appeal Brunch! Shout to Chuck Creekmur, DJ Carisma, DJ Damage, IAMSU!, P-Lo, Kehlani, Kamaiyah, Nineteen85 and everyone else I saw/met/got drunk with, LOL. So glad I got to see the Illmore in its last year! And the FADER Fort was dope too.

People send me their music links all day long on social media and in my email, but with a schedule like mine, it’s damn near impossible to ever sit there and listen to it…not to mention the fact that I really don’t care to. Being that I have no interest in being a manager or a publicist, I’m not really scouting for new talent like, ever.
However, there are times when I stumble across new things that I love. Working in music, I meet tons of artists all of the time – some already established, some working their way up. Of the latter, it’s more than just the music that tends to pique my interest, as I pay attention to their social media interaction, their personality, their style, the team they’ve put in place (because NO one can do this on their own,) and their overall brand. There are tons of songs I come across from upcoming artists that I do enjoy, but if the only thing they have going on for themselves is a good song or two, I’m not ready to commit as a “fan” just yet.
That being said, there are a handful of young, hungry artists I’ve met this year, and 7 in particular truly stood out to me. I love putting people on to new music, especially stuff that I am passionate about. Though I’m not an A&R, I do recognize the fact that I’m in a position to shed light on things, and I definitely need people to be checking for these guys! In NO order (though I do go from west to east,) check out our list below of who to watch for in 2015. Remember who told you!
