Interview: “From Drake And Beyond, Producer Mike Zombie Talks The Long Road To The Top”

zo

It’s been over four years since Mike Zombie was introduced to the masses on what couldn’t have been a larger-scale. Not only did the New Jersey native place a beat with Drake on a song that would go on to be one of the Toronto superstar’s biggest tracks [“Started From The Bottom”], but he also inked a production deal with OVO. The future looked bright for the talented 20-year-old, but while he’s maintained a presence in music, it’s nowhere on the level that he (and everyone else) thought it would be by now.

Glances at his Instagram show the now-24-year-old still has an affiliation to OVO, often rocking clothing adorned with Drake’s signature owl. He is sure to post about new projects from the OVO camp and congratulates The Boy on his various successes throughout the years, but yet, the posts seem rather one-sided. There has been no sign of Zombie on the track on any of the aforementioned projects, from lesser-known acts like Roy Woods, up to the capo himself. And though Zombie has put out multiple projects of his own over the years (as he raps as well), there hasn’t been any posts from his labelmates about those either.

I think this may have been my favorite LA trip of all time! Thank you to Luxi for housing us on the first night when our Air BnB wasn’t ready! On day two, we hit Kamaiyah, YG and Drake’s video shoot for “Why You Always Hatin?”. Later, we went to Problem and DJ Quik’s listening party for Rosecrans, then to eat with IAMSU!, and finished the night at Ty Dolla $ign’s studio for his session with Jahaan Sweet.

Day three, we stopped by RJ’s video shoot for one of his O.M.M.I.O. 3 cuts, hit the beach in Santa Monica and finished up at Snoop’s listening session for his new album. Loved getting to see him and meet Warren G!

(Video) Mike Zombie on Ebro In The Morning

MIKE ZOMBIE

Producer/rapper Mike Zombie will release his next solo project, Humble Genius, on July 1. In promotion of the album, the New Jersey native stopped by Ebro In The Morning this week.

Most people know Mike for his production, as he had his breakout moment producing Drake’s “Started From The Bottom” and was immediately signed to OVO Sound. He went on to produce more hits, including DJ Khaled’s “They Don’t Love You No More” with French Montana, Jay Z and Meek Mill, plus Remy Ma on the remix – her first verse after being released from prison!

Now Mike is both producing and rapping, and speaks to Ebro In The Morning about balancing both, his relationship with OVO, my stellar taste in music 🙂 and more!
