(Photos) Marisa Mendez x “Vinyl to Viral” Panel at Soho House [New York, NY]

I was asked to speak on a panel that consisted of Pete Rock, NY Knicks player Brandon Jennings and a rep from Adidas on new age rappers and the disconnect with some of the OGs.
We had a really great conversation, and everyone made some really good points. What an honor to be a part of something so dope! Also – I met RL. Randomly awesome, LOL! More pics below.

BET Cancels 106 & Park After 14 Years On Air…And I Have So Many Memories From Visiting!

It’s the end of an era. After more than 14 years on air, BET will finally say goodbye to its daily music video countdown show, 106 & Park, with the final show on December 19. The network made the announcement yesterday via BET’s President of Music Programming, Stephen Hill.
“We have pride in being involved with the show that has welcomed almost every movie star, music superstar, and fresh-faced talent you can name,” Stephen said. “We’ve all laughed with and been entertained by the young men and women hosts that have charmed us at 6 p.m. (and more recently 5 p.m.) each weekday.”
He went on to promise to remain in the digital world, as well as with their popular specials like their annual New Year’s Eve countdown, 106 & Party.
Though my generation of late 20-somethings have long since stopped watching this program, it’s definitely a feeling of nostalgia, as we were the first audience that they catered to! We’ve watched Free and AJ when we got home after middle school and high school. We felt the emotions when they left. We were annoyed by Tigger and Julissa‘s entrance, and skeptical but eventually delighted by Rocsi and Terrence later replacing them. (It was around then that a lot of us went on to college and kind of grew out of the show.) Literally none of us cared about Bow Wow and Keshia Chanté, and clearly the current audience didn’t care too much either. I wonder if Bow is regretting balling out on Erica Mena‘s birthday last week, now that he’s soon to be out of a job…

(Photos) Marisa Mendez for HTC [Miami, FL & Coachella/Indio, CA]

HTC just dropped their new phone with Beats Audio, and recruited a few select bloggers to talk about their product. The company flew me, Karen Civil and a few others out to Miami, FL in March to attend the shoot for the phone’s commercial, and then to Coachella in April to use the phone while there and discuss our experiences with it. Super dope phone and a ton of fun! AND I GOT TO EXPERIENCE THE TUPAC HOLOGRAM!
You can read one of my recaps over at IFWT.
