Editorial: 7 Things You Should Know By The Time You’re 23

LifeisTremendez_23

This past week, I celebrated yet another birthday. I didn’t do anything special or extravagant – another year passed and I saw how truly precious life can be. The last 365 days have become the foundation of which I’m going to build my life upon, and I’m fine with that. I have been blessed to be surrounded by a loving family and the great staff here at LifeIsTremendez. There are some things in life I’m STILL trying to figure out. We have all had that time in life where we assumed we would be at a certain part in our lives at a certain age and…I’m no different. There are certain things I have yet to accomplish (not living on a futon in my parents basement is at the top of the list). However, I do feel at 23 there are a few things you should know how to do or at least have the desire to learn.

1. Politics:
At this point in your life, you probably have voted or plan to vote in the next election. You should be able to hold a conversation about current political issues, because simply saying “Obama sucks” just won’t cut it anymore.

2. Waxing:
You aren’t a child. Stop shaving your lady bits with a razor, and be a grownup and go get waxed. It’s painful, yet refreshing…like life.

3. Travel:
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably too broke to backpack across Europe. However, I’m pretty sure there’s a concert or something a few states over that you could surely attend.

4. Good Girlfriends:
Having good girlfriends is vital in your 20s. You are going to experience some extreme ups and downs, and it’s always nice to have someone there with a glass of wine and some chick flicks to help you weather the storm.

5. Managing Money:
I don’t care if you make minimum wage or 6 figures – you should be putting at least 5% of your paycheck away for a rainy day, and another 5% for something that you can enjoy. You should always know your credit score and debt-to-income ratio. Be on top of your finances! Your parents are sick of lending you money they won’t get back…and that gravy train is going to be stopping VERY soon too, by the way. Fun reality check!

6. Get Over Heartbreak:
Heartbreak is hard and you have probably experienced your fair share, but letting it hold you back is not an option. Get out of bed, put the ice cream down, put on a cocktail dress and get your ass out into society! Don’t let someone who didn’t care about you rob you of your glory. You’re way better than that. And they’re corny anyway.

7. Changing A Tire
I have NEVER had to change a tire but I know in the instance I should have to, I know how and you should too. [Editor’s note: also make sure you have AAA. Because I’ll be damned if I break a nail trying to change a tire. Ain’t nobody got time for that!]
